Brontege and Peerage

"Barontege and Peerage" documents the period of the Glinsk Burkes from the latter part of the 16th century up to the start of the 20th century. Its first reference is to Sir Hubert Boy Burke, Knight, who died on the 1st January 1598. He was Lord of Clanconway and Glinsk. He was son of William Burke MacDavid of Clanconway who was married to a daughter of Teige Caoch O’Kelly of Aughhrim. Sir Hubert surrendered his estates to Queen Elizabeth and was given a new grant by Patent. By his first marriage he had a son, Edmond, who succeeded him. Of his second marriage to Finola came 3 sons: Festus of Donamon Castle, Henry of Clogh, Co Galway and William of Kilnalag, Williamstown.

Edmond (heir of Sir Hubert) married Ellis, daughter of Iriel O’Ferrall Boy of Mornyn. Edmond died (vita patris) leaving a son as heir: Ulick.

Sir Ulick Burke, Knight of Glinsk, became a Baronet of Ireland on 2nd August 1628. He was also a Member of Parliament for Galway. Ulick first married Catherine, the 4th daughter of Theobald Dillon, and they had a daughter, Eleanor (who married Edmund Burke of Kilcornan) and a son, Edmund (2nd Baronet), whose second marriage was to Jennet Browne.

Sir Edmund Burke, 2nd Baronet: Sir Edmund married 3 times (1st daughter of Fleming, 2nd Honora, daughter of Col John Kelly of Skreen, 3rd Mary, daughter of Nicholas Netterville of Lecarrow, Co Galway (April 1674). Sir Edmund’s will was proven on 5th February 1686-7 and was succeeded by his oldest son, Ulick (3rd Baronet).

Sir Ulick, 3rd Baronet of Glinsk, credited with building the castle in the last quarter of the century. He was an MP for Galway and married Ismay Kelly of Skreen but, as they had no family, his title and estates passed to his half brother, John (4th Baronet) when Ulick died in 1708.

Sir John (4th Baronet). This John married Jane Dillon (daughter of Theobald, 7th Viscount Dillon). Sir John’s will was dated 1721 and was proved in 1724. He had 4 sons, Festus (5th Baronet), Theobald (6th Baronet), Henry (7th Baronet) and Richard. Richard married Margaret Cheevers of Killyan, Co Galway.
