  Reflections on a Busy Year

The annual general meeting of Glinsk Community Council took place recently - and there was a full attendance to hear of the progress over the past year.

In his Presidential address, Fr. Peter Thompson(Glinsk Parish Preist) described the past year as a "year of waiting". This was a very apt observation as there has been a lull in funding for community groups over the past year as agencies such as Leader are awaiting allocations which has led to a certain amount of frustration as projects by many groups have been put on hold.

The Chairman, Jimmy Barlow, welcomed all of the members of the community and paid tribute to Project Manager, Sharon Timothy for her work over the past few years which has culminated in Glinsk going live with its very own website so that from near and far one can keep up to date with happenings in Glinsk by clicking on www.Glinsk.com.

The Project Manager gave a full report on her achievements over the past year which included the completion of Glinsk Enterprise Centre and the pursuit of funding for Glinsk Heritage Park as well as a number of training courses which had been completed by adults during the year.

The Secretary’s report invited people to look around at the local area and see the number of projects that are in train, clear evidence of the commitment by the community to develop Glinsk for the future.

Central to the Community Council’s work is the construction of the Heritage Park, which involves a great amount of advance planning and design work. During the year, the first in a series of bridges were built under the watchful eye of Tom Lally and CE scheme employees.

The first of the replica monuments have also been put in place. This project resulted in Glinsk scooping the AIB award for 2001.

Environment Work also continued with a large area at Ballinakill being transformed into a wild flower garden and it is hoped that this and other work by the Tidy Towns committee and Job Initiative employees will result in Glinsk breaking the 200 mark barrier in the Tidy Towns competition this year.

Glinsk Song Contest, now in its fourteenth year, was also recognised by Galway County Council during the year with the presentation of an ‘Arts Award’.

The citation read: "this award deservedly goes to one of the country’s finest community organisations for this fine annual festival of song which will be seen again this year when the final is staged on Sunday night, July 1st".

Training for local people continued in Glinsk with a number qualifying for the ECDL certificate. The County Enterprise Board also visited Glinsk to inform the local community in an e-commerce seminar.

During the year, Glinsk Housing Association has been preparing designs for a ten-house project at Glinsk. These houses are being built specifically for senior citizens who would like to retire within their own community. Planning permission is now being sought for this major development.

Ballinakill Cemetery has undergone a complete facelift over the past year and is a great example of what can be achieved through partnership between communities and local authorities. Through a combination of local fund-raising, assistance from local councilors and a special grant from Galway County Council, new paths, etc. Have been laid by voluntary effort.

This year’s walking festival has had to be cancelled due to the threat of foot-and-mouth disease, but will reappear on the calendar for the coming year.

The widespread support from the local community is the hallmark community achievements in Glinsk. There is a great groundswell of support for all community projects. People are available to give of their time and the generosity of the local people to all fund-raising efforts is the basis for the continued success of Glinsk Community Council.
